Perfect Fedora Desktop in 5 easy steps

Fedora is an awesome distro, but it lacks a bit polish to be usable work and pleasure desktop out of the box. Follow these 5 easy steps to make a perfect Fedora desktop. Please also share how you make your Fedora install perfect.
1. First step is updating the whole system, and is the one I hate the most, so let’s just get over with it…
sudo dnf update -y

2. Now let’s install Fedy tool that lets you tweak lot’s of additional things fast, streamlines installation of software and tweak and is really simple to use:
su -c "curl http://satya164.github.io/fedy/fedy-installer -o fedy-installer && chmod +x fedy-installer && ./fedy-installer"

3. Fedy has also a nice gui, but once you get to know what it can do it is faster to do all things via command line:
sudo fedy --exec sublime_text3 touchpad_tap rpmfusion_repos media_codecs skype_linux tor_browser adobe_flash nautilus_dropbox teamviewer_linux

4. Now let’s install some additiona goodies, and use dnf tool instead yum because it is much faster:
sudo dnf install synapse faience-icon-theme clipit vlc qbitorrent krusader filelight k3b-extras-freeworld redshift-gtk htop lm_sensors filezilla @cinnamon-desktop xchat pidgin gnome-tweak-tool

5. And best for last, compile and install tilda which is just best terminal ever:

sudo dnf install git automake libconfuse-devel vte3-devel gtk3-devel glib-devel gettext-devel gcc
git clone https://github.com/lanoxx/tilda.git
cd tilda/
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
make --silent
sudo make install

That is is, just don’t forget to switch to Cinnamon as your default desktop next time you login and change icons to Faience icons. Enjoy your perfect Fedora desktop!

MATE desktop with Compiz Fusion on Fedora 16/17

If you are running Fedora 16 or 17 and you are missing your old GNOME desktop with Compiz Fusion effects then you will love this post.
Thanks to the great work of Wolfgang Ulbrich for his awesome work on packaging MATE Dekstop for Fedora 16/17 and even bringing it to Fedora 18 by default!
Installing MATE desktop is very easy on both Fedora 16 or 17, but installing Compiz Fusion on Fedora 16 is a bit tricky.

tc-play is free (as in freedom) version of TrueCrypt

TrueCrypt is free (as in beer) software used for on-the-fly encryption of data, but it is not licenced under open source licence.
tc-play is free (as in freedom) tool whic provides full support for creating and opening/mapping TrueCrypt-compatible volumes and it is licenced under GPL licence.
Because TrueCrypt software is under a poor license, which is not only non-free, but has the potential to be actively dangerous to end users or distributors who agree to it, opening them to possible legal action even if they abide by all of the licensing terms, depending on the intent of the upstream copyright holder. Fedora continues to make efforts to try to work with the TrueCrypt upstream to fix all of the issues in their license so that it can be considered Free, but have not yet been successful. – taken from Fedora Forbidden Items page.
There has been no articles regarding tc-play, and that seams strange since it provides great functionality, hopefully some reviews and tutorials will soon follow.

i-gotU GT200 GPS on Fedora

i-gotU GT200 GPS is the greatest pocket GPS gadget you can find, if you are a geek then this is one gadget you have to get.
Why is it so great? It is a really cheap GPS device (around 55$ or 45€), it has a great SiRF III chipset and it works as a standalone GPS logging device because it has on-board memory! Did I mention it is really cheap? ;)
i-gotU GT200 software that comes with doesn’t have support for Linux or Mac.
The good news is that there is a project called igotu2gpx that adds Linux and Mac support for this great device!
To get this utility running on Fedora here are step by step instructions on how to do it:

Supress cp “Do you want to overwrite” prompt in Fedora

When you try to copy one file over existing one as root user in Fedora you will be asked to confirm that action, but as regular user you can overwrite existing files without any question. So you can easily overwrite your own personal files, GNOME settings, documents, images, etc.

Moovida still not in Fedora :(

I’m looking forward to seeing Moovida in Fedora, but currently it is stuck in bugzilla limbo :(
Currently Ubuntu has much better choice of multimedia and media center apps, that is why I hope Moovida gets in Fedora repos soon.
If you know somebody who would sponsor this packet please point him/her in the right direction.
Good news is that Moovida available via Fedora 13 and 14 repos for some time now. Bad news is that Moovida project has moved away from Linux and is only making closed source media center that works on Windows only :(
Not to sad about it because XBMC is currently much better media center that Moovida will ever be.

Linux Mint – little distro that could

If you compare Linux Mint 10 release notes to Ubuntu 10.10 or Fedora 14 release notes it becomes obvious why Linux Mint is so popular.
Linux Mint has more features that matter for Linux desktop users that Ubuntu and Fedora combined.
Congrats to Linux Mint developers for all their hard work and dedication.
So why not join Fusion Linux Fedora Remix and become new contributor so that we can create some healthy competition for Linux Mint. It is obvious that Ubuntu and Fedora aren’t focused on desktop users.
