there is a good reason why the icon is not on the panel. I don't want my clients clicking on it and than calling me to ask: "there is a big black hole on my desktop. what should I do?"..

For me it's a "Yes please!" But I don't mind if I have to do it by myself. So when nongeeks get confused by the terminal just left it at it's place.
Btw. eveything (except for server tasks) should be possible without the terminal.

@ignacio: That smells like the right answer to me. (I do much the same thing.) Any time a "productivity desktop user" has to open a terminal, somewhere there's been a bug. For people who like digging into the guts, hitting a keystroke is faster than switching to the mouse to do things. Fortunately it's so easy to customize panels that everyone can have it their way!

I don't add a terminal icon in this panel, in fact, I actually remove the two other ones.

Mouse clicking shortcuts are bad. The applications are already present in the menus, there's no need to invade your interface with a lot more of them. Why don'tyou also add an icon for OOo calc and wroter that you use a lot ? And also one for Gimp ? And one for each and every software you use regularly ? Oh god, you just recreated a second menu in your panel...

If you want to go fast when launching an application, drop the mouse and use ALT + F2 ;)

absolutely no, leading by example we should try to improve the experience for the user. Putting a default icon to the terminal would imply a failing on our part in having them be required to learn it's ways instead of using easy, translatable and accessible GUI apps.

Now I use the terminal a great deal, mainly because I do packaging, I wish I had better integrate tools to do my work and frankly I would love to see less of the terminal than I do, not more. I find I am more productive in environments that has been designed to my use cases rather than hitting it with the bash+vim hammer.

So no.. no no no.. if you give my mother the impression that she needs to learn this arcanic relic of a tool to use Linux by elevating it to her default desktop experience she will run away from Linux all together. Many users will do so.

A default should apply to the greatest common benefactor, you or I are not always the greatest examples of such a target.

I don't think it should be there, I also do it every time I get a new home dir, or for some reason I get my gnome confs destroyed by me. I usually use a separated partition for home and never ever format or erase the configuration in my home.

I don't think it is a good idea, a icon on the bar, by default, is inviting people to click it and "normal" users have a bad feeling about command line interface, I don't think it sends the right message, sure we geeks and hackers all love the good old command prompt, but there is no intrinsic need for it anymore, a default icon might imply that sooner or later he will need to use this "dos" to use linux.
